And let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” - Gen 11:4

Man's desire for fame was one of the reasons that led to the building of the tower of Babel. Pride is still the bane of every good person and work even today!

In churches and ministries, how often do we see the desire of people to be recognized and appreciated manifest itself in jealousies, envying, quarreling, jockeying for offices and positions, desires to have the best seats in the synagogue, and to be called honorable names? How often is the church about following a person rather than the Word of God?

This is not to say fame is evil, but like money, the inordinate love of it is. Moses was the most humble person on the earth in his day. Of our Lord it was prophesied " He will not cry out, nor raise His voice,Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street." (Isaiah 42:2) He commands us not to do our righteous deeds before men, but to do them in secret, because God sees what we do in secret, and He will reward us! ( Matthew 6:1-18 )

So do not think if you don't have a large ministry, or are not a leader, or not recognized that you are not able to serve God. Serve Him by loving your fellow humans in your family, home bible study, work, and those who cross your path, every day. Small is not insignificant before Him!

Be watchful of pride - it will cause you to sin against God - as our adversary fell and as the men of Babel disobeyed the command to fill the earth but chose to reside in one place. Examine your motives for serving - if they are to satisfy your longing for significance and self worth - Stop! You are already significant because God knows you, you are in His image and Christ died for you. That should be enough!

Let us disciples be as our Master in looking to glorify God in all things, and not ourselves.
