When a being listens to the voice of the self against the voice of God..... Only humans and Angels have this privilege (that I know of) in this universe. The rest of the universe, indeed all reality, obeys the Laws of God down to the last subatomic particle.

This was the fall of Satan, and our ancestors. Ultimately, the self desires to replace, and indeed BE God! Here is the root of all evil...

But Christ, being BEGOTTEN as the Son, and WHOLLY God, did not think equality was something to be grasped, but became obedient, emptying himself of His Glory to take on his beloved title of Son of Man, dwelt with corrupt flesh, and became the Servant of All. Here is the root of all good - to obey the Father in all things - for His Will revealed in His Word is pure and always good, and his precepts and statutes the standards for right and wrong.

So there you are - recognize the guises the self puts on to entice disobedience - the quest for power, riches, pleasure and the fruits arising out of that - as opposed to the fruits of obedience the Spirit so gently provides.

Walk in this Spirit and you will not fulfil the lusts of the self, but will have a walk pleasing to God, and one which will bless your character and deeds - which are all you will take from this world!

A last word: Christs sonship and our inheritance, indeed our union with Him, confers upon us divinity- God created us to be like Him! We ARE gods ( small g ) and hence the danger of straying from His Will - it has CATASTROPHIC effects!! But His Plan from all eternity is perfect!!!
