Gen 2:25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. In countless readings of the book of Genesis, the paintings and art throughout the ages, the initial lack of clothing on Adam and Eve is not much remarked on. Even less, is the text above, where it is cryptically noted that they felt no shame.
Most commentators fall into the ..."awww... they were so innocent before they fell .. " category, others have hpothesized that they were clothed with light.. and didn't need anything else.
I think there is more here than meets the eye ... smile emoticon - specifically, this text offers an amazing clue to the overall plan and design of our God! Think about it... in all of the creation accounts before this verse, with tons of animals/fishes/birds all being created, not once is nakedness or shame mentioned. Why talk about it all of a sudden?
Even more interesting, once Adam tastes the fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, he realizes that he and Eve are starkers!! That is one BIG difference that is stated in the text (Pre/Post Fruit - Gen 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons). Even more interesting, is the two part question that the LORD asks them - Gen 3:11 Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
Part 1 - SomeONE had to have told Adam he was naked ( but the Serpent didn't even mention it or bring it up ) OR Part 2 - He had to have eaten of the fruit of the tree, which made him realize that going starkers was NOT A GOOD THING.
Most interesting of all, after the LORD has finished pronouncing judgement, the first thing He does is make clothes for the pair. HE CLOTHES THEM. Gen 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. God did not intend for them to stay naked, and He took the proper action of providing them clothes.
Everywhere in the Bible we see people (and angels, and God Himself) clothed. Nakedness is used as a metaphor for shame. ALWAYS.
So whats my point?
The point is that it was ALWAYS God's plan to give man the knowledge of Good and Evil. He never intended them to remain shamefully naked under the eyes of heaven and the angels for long. The deception by the serpent was to have them disobey God by distrusting Him, and act in their own strength instead of waiting for Him. A neat trick! He got them to act preemptively....
Most of us wish that Adam had not fallen - but if he hadn't, Christ would not have come, there would be no Church and no glory! This whole episode gives us a fantastic clue that Christ indeed was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world!
So - did Adam really have a choice? Of course He did, but God knew what He would do from the beginning, and had a plan in place before ever the world was created!
AMAZING ISN'T IT?
