If the one who kills someone ever goes outside the border of the city of refuge he fled to, and the avenger of blood finds him outside the border of his city of refuge and kills him, the avenger will not be guilty of bloodshed, for the one who killed a person was supposed to live in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest.

Only after the death of the high priest may the one who has killed a person return to the land he possesses. (Num 35:26)

The city of refuge was one of six designated cities where a person guilty of involuntary manslaughter went - to escape retribution from the family of the person killed.

The injunction to remain in the city was for the protection of the accused. The requirement to wait for the death of the high priest was practical as it gave time for emotions to settle down!

Yet here we see the work of Jesus pictured. He is typified here as both a place of shelter, and in the picture of the death of the high priest.

Though most of us are not guilty of murder as Adam was, our imputed guilt makes it imperative that we run to and remain in the safety of, Jesus Christ. His death provides us the freedom to resume the life God always intended for us. If we go outside His protection, our adversary can kill us with impunity because we have not taken advantage of the Grace extended to us.

Much to think about and meditate on here...
