He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then He gave you manna to eat, which you and your fathers had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. ( Dt 8:3 )

What an exquisite miniature we have here! Christ quoted the last part of this verse when He was tempted by Satan, and the whole verse itself gives us so much to think about.

God gives us hunger and suffering to humble us and draw us to Him. He then provides the Heavenly food and blessings which the world does not know - the Bread and the Word of God which gives us life here and eternal Life hereafter!

The book of Hebrews says it this way... "Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby." ( Hb 12:11 )Let us joyfully accept the hunger and the discipline we presently have so that it may yield to us the manna of righteousness!
